SEO In Four Easy Steps - Do It Yourself

Step 1:

Get a theme of your website. It could be anything ranging from a small niche to a big corporate website. Then make a keyword research for your niche using the tool www.nichebot.com
I always go for a list of around 10-15 keywords at the beginning and use 3-4 keywords per page.

Step 2:

Make a "search engine friendly" web design (considering the points below) i.e site that dont use frames, it be static html pages or convert the dynamic to static pages, what would be the use of having a website that is not indexed by the search engines. Build it your self or get some one to help you, or completely get your website done from a web designing company.

Step 3:

On-Page SEO.
This is an important factor.
On-page SEO has many different factors. The chief factors being.

The TITLE Tag:

<Title>Your primary keyword + some text making for it</Title>
for eg.
<Title>Free Games Download - GamersPalace.com</Title>

The Meta Keywords Tag:

It is believed that it has very low weight now a days, but it is a good habit to use them.

<meta name="keywords" content="free games download, download free games, games download">

The Meta Description Tag:

Very useful. Well this is the description that search engines use to show them in the search pages.

<meta name="description" content="Free games download and reviews at GamersPalace.com Download your favorite games right now!">

In the <Body> of the webpage:

The <Hx> Tags:

<H1>Your Primary Keyword</H1>
<H2>Your Secondary Keyword</H2>
<H3>Your Tertiary Keyword</H3>
and so on...

Use one time your keywords in bold, italics and underlined. This is a good practice to tell the search engines that these are the keywords that are most important to the webpage. A good practice is by using your keyword at the bottom with the copyright information.

for eg. Copyright 2006 Free games download and reviews at GamersPalace.com

Step 4:

Off-page SEO
This is a very very important factor as far as SEO is concerned!
Quality links from quality sites and the sites that is closely related to your market is the most imprtant thing!

Submit your sites to directories.

DMOZ

Search Feature Directory

Business Blogs Directory

How much time? Well that depends on you... Your success is totally dependent on your hard work!

There are many differenet ways of online promotion, except than SEO (well this being the chief factor) but that we will be discussing later!
